Trauma/PTSD

Each and every one of us will encounter stress in our lives. When a person experiences a strong emotional response to a very stressful event that impacts their ability to cope, it can be considered traumatic and lead to trauma related symptoms.

Trauma can vary widely in is impact on an individual. Sometimes trauma can lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Anyone can develop PTSD and or trauma reactions this can include but are not limited to:

·      Unwanted and intrusive memories (having flashbacks, nightmares, emotional and physical reactions when triggered by something that reminds you of the traumatic event)

·      Avoidance (Resisting thoughts, people, place or activities that remind you of the event)

·      Changes in emotional and physical reactions (easily startled, irritability, guilt and shame, inability to concentrate, difficulty sleeping, aggression)

·      An increase in unwanted thoughts and moods (Hopelessness, difficult maintaining relationships, feeling detached from others, emotional numbness, negative beliefs about yourself and the world around you).

Trauma symptoms and PTSD are treated at M.Rowley Psychotherapy in a variety of ways: EMDR, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, and Trauma focused- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Together we will discuss the pros and cons of each approach and collaboratively decide which treatment modality will work best for your specific needs.
